Tour of
Historic Dutch and English Barns
Saturday, October
11, 2008
Hosted
by Winnakee Land Trust
The Winnakee Land Trust is hosting a
tour of historic barns in Rhinebeck and Staatsburg on October 11, 2008
between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Eight privately owned historic buildings will
be opened for the first time to Winnakee’s guests. The tour will
highlight the extraordinary place these endangered structures hold in
Hudson Valley history. Northern Dutchess is home to some of the rarest,
oldest Dutch barns in the U.S., several of which will be on the tour.
The day begins--and tickets will be
sold--at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome, off Stone Church Road in
Rhinebeck. A mapped brochure will outline the self-guided route. Some of
the sites will have other attractions, including a working orchard with
pick-your-own apples, a world-class equestrian facility, spectacular
views, historic buildings, and other noteworthy features.
Docents will guide people through each
site, pointing out how the buildings were built and used. The tour will
wrap up with a wine-and-cheese reception at 4:00 p.m. at Clifton Point
in Rhinebeck, site of the historic stone Astor Barn complex, and current
home of photographer Annie Leibovitz.
Advance tickets may be bought through
Winnakee Land Trust, 845-876-4213. Tickets are $35 and children 10 and
under may attend free of charge. Reservations are requested and boxed
lunches will be available with advance purchase required.
